Articulation disorders are errors in the production of individual speech sounds. This may sound like substituting one sound for another, changing a sound, or leaving a sound off of a word. Phonological disorders are predictable, rule-based errors that affect more than one sound. Both articulation and phonological errors may make it hard for people to understand your child. Speech therapy would focus on the motor aspects of speech production to improve clarity in your child's speech.
Expressive language is how your child uses words to express themselves. Tasks like labeling objects, describing actions, putting words together in a sentence, using grammar correctly, and retelling a story may be difficult for your child.
Receptive language is your child's ability to understand language. Tasks like following directions or answering questions may be difficult for your child.
Pragmatic language refers to the social language skills that we use in our daily interactions with others. This includes what we say, how we say it, our non-verbal communication (i.e., eye contact, facial expressions, body language, etc.) and how appropriate our interactions are in a given situation. Children with difficulties in this area may misinterpret other peoples’ communicative intent and may struggle to respond appropriately either verbally or non-verbally.
Children with ASD may present with pragmatic language challenges (i.e., interacting appropriately with peers, taking the perspective of others, and understanding emotions and feelings). A child may have other language-based difficulties including initiating and maintaining a conversation, asking questions, understanding questions, and following directions.
Stuttering is characterized by the repetition of sounds, words or phrases. Prologations or stretching out of sounds or words may occur, as well as blocks or pausing. Stuttering modification techniques can help increase your child's confidence when speaking.
